Welcome to Arrest Stories.
A Lehigh Acres woman has been accused of stealing personal information to fund inmate accounts at the Lee County Jail. Here's what may have happened.
Veronica Reyes, 33, was arrested yesterday after an investigation revealed she had been operating a scheme for more than two and a half years. Deputies found over 1,600 Post-it Notes containing stolen personal information at her home, including ID numbers, addresses, and other sensitive data. Reyes allegedly collected this information during her previous job.
According to Sheriff Carmine Marceno, "Having over 1,600 personal Post-Its with information of inmates, personal information, ID numbers and all the above, it shows us the level of deception of what they were doing." It's unclear how Reyes used this stolen information to fund inmate accounts at the jail. However, authorities have charged her with 60 counts of fraud and grand theft.
The scheme was uncovered after a lengthy investigation, which led to Reyes' arrest yesterday. Authorities are still reviewing evidence and building their case against her.
